When the news first came through the wires that Estonians are buying Kārums, we were slightly confused here at Bad Baltic HQ.

We buy Kārums every day in Estonia. How is that news? Our fridge is literally full of them.

Turns out they mean Falber Investments OÜ, parent company of Agrone, has signed an agreement to acquire AS Rīgas piena kombināts, subject to approval from the Estonian and Latvian governments.

That's Estonia's largest raw milk producer buying Latvia's largest dairy processor.

They make a whole load of other products, such as Dzintars cheese, Limbažu Piens, and Rasēns flavoured milks, but it's Kārums that's getting all the attention because it is the tastiest snack in the Baltics, and probably the world.

News of Estonia's vanilla ninja move sent shockwaves across Baltic Twitter.

On the other side, some began immediately lording it up.

Around 30 million Kārums(es?) are sold each year and it's consistently ranked as the most beloved brand in the Baltics. No wonder the Latvians are proud.

The photoshoppers got straight to work though.

Things seemed to be getting heated.

We did our best to explain the situation to international observers.

Some Latvians insisted they could already taste the change.

And that it hits slower.

There was more talk of Ruhnu and more memes repurposed.

To be fair, many Estonians still have raw memories of losing Põltsamaa mustard to the Latvians earlier this year (along with the actual production, not just ownership).

The news came through on the eve of Estonian Restoration of Independence Day.

From Baltic Twitter to Balkan Twitter (no relation), Bianka made an astute outside observation.

If all this wasn't enough, on Estonian Re-Independence Day, the Estonians also just beat the Lithuanians at their own game with a last second victory of 110-108 in basketball.

There's plenty more where all this came from, by the way.

In the end though, we are all still brothers and sisters. Well..

OK, now a serious point.

Kārums will always be a Latvian treat. Hopefully the only thing that will change is its already complex international ownership structure.

If this acquisition goes ahead, the new owners must keep production in Latvia and not mess with the taste. Estonian Twitter has Latvian Twitter's back on that one.
